Recruiting Bronny James has proven to be a challenge for some colleges interested in luring him to their programs.

The six-foot-three guard and eldest son of Lakers superstar LeBron James is in his senior year at Sierra Canyon in Southern California and is beginning to whittle down his college choices.

However, the process is seemingly a tough task for the teams interested in recruiting his talents.

Some coaches have opened up on the challenge, revealing to get to the starlet they must first pass through the family’s publicist, his mother, and other hoops.

‘I tried to get involved, but you had to jump through a thousand hoops just to get to the mom,’ one ACC coach told On3. ‘You’re not allowed to talk to the kid. You have to schedule a time on Tuesday or Thursday with the publicist just to talk to the mom.’

Another SEC coach added, ‘Looking back on it, we probably should have tried to get involved. To be honest, I didn’t know how realistic the recruitment would be.’

Bronny has showcased his raw potential on several occasions for Sierra Canyon, averaging 20 points in a three-game stretch against Chaminade, Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler and L.A. Loyola, while leaving his teammates and coaches stunned after producing a between-the-legs jam against the former.

He is the No. 38 overall prospect and No. 10 combo guard in On3’s 2023 rankings. He is also the No. 7 player in California.

‘Simply put, Bronny is special, and he possesses the same greatness we see from LeBron,’ one west coast college assistant said.

It is believed James now has offers on the table from nine college teams as he prepares to take the next step on his basketball journey, and they have been narrowed down to three.

According to the Los Angeles Times, he will pick between Ohio – his home state and clear favorite of LeBron – USC and Oregon at the end of Sierra Canyon’s season, which will be in late February or early March.

The report suggests that Memphis Tigers, the other main program interested in recruiting him, are now out of the running.

In response to the LA Times report, the 18-year-old told On3: ‘I’m still open, but those are options.’

Meanwhile, on Sunday, LeBron James told The Oregonian that Bronny has not necessarily limited his options to those three schools but that they are in a ‘top five or six.’

Earlier this week, Bronny was one of 24 high school elite basketball athletes selected for McDonald’s famous All-American game on Tuesday, just like his father was.

Bronny has already penned an endorsement deal with Nike as he gears up for his college career, which mother Savannah believes will be a ‘really cool’ way to ‘start his legacy’ in the sport.

‘Bronny wants to have a college career,’ Savannah told Sports Illustrated

‘I think it would be really cool for him to start with collegiate basketball, just to start his legacy there.’
