Review puts 888 licence in jeopardy

Betting giant 888’s licence is under review after an investment vehicle backed by Kenny Alexander put him forward as its chief executive

Betting giant 888’s licence is under review after an investment vehicle backed by Kenny Alexander put him forward as its chief executive.

The owner of William Hill said the review, which could lead to a hefty fine or its British gambling licence being revoked, was centred on FS Gaming’s investment and its proposal to shake up 888’s management.

FS Gaming, backed by Alexander and other former Entain bosses, snapped up a 6.6 per cent stake last month.

Since then board changes have included making Alexander the chief executive.

Entain has been entangled in a four-year HMRC investigation over possible breaches of the Bribery Act from its former subsidiary in Turkey.

Alexander led GVC for over 13 years turning it into a FTSE 100 business with 25,000 staff.

The Gambling Commission said it did not comment on individual operators or whether they are under investigation.
