- But Roma’s El Shaarawy has been indicted and will talk to police this month
Roma winger Stephan El Shaarawy is under investigation by Italian police after allegedly brawling with a thief who tried to steal his car back in February.
The 28-year-old, who has been capped 29 times for Italy, is alleged to have inflicted serious injuries on Jose Carlos Aliaga Sagrdia, 30, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
Sagardia has received a sentence of one year and six months on charges of attempted theft, but El Shaarawy and his lawyer are expecting to talk to interrogators this month.
The newspaper report details that El Shaarawy allegedly spotted Sagardia breaking into the window of his Lamborghini while he was playing video games with former national team team-mate Alessio Cerci on February 12.
El Shaaraway then rushed out the door to chase the thief, with Corriere della Sera saying the footballer pinned Sagardia to the ground – the defendant’s lawyer, Veronica Paturzo, claims he was ‘beaten up’ by El Shaarawy.
However, two witnesses are understood to have seen Sagardia punch himself in the face after they heard a commotion, with El Shaarawy shouting.

Sagardia was treated in Rome’s Sant’Eugenio hospital and then filed a complaint against the footballer, who has been indicted by prosecutor Carlo Villani.
Football Italia have released the following statement from El Shaaraway, via his lawyer:
‘The accused is a person who was stealing his car, he can say anything, but everything must be ascertained.
‘Stephan will tell what happened when the interrogation is scheduled, which will certainly take place by the end of July.’
El Shaarawy has been capped 29 times for Italy but was not picked in their Euro 2020 squad
El Shaarawy last played for Italy in March but was not picked in Roberto Mancini’s squad for Euro 2020.
He re-joined Roma in January from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua on a free transfer.
The winger has also previously played for AC Milan, Monaco and Genoa.
