Roman Kostomarov, who won gold for Russia at the 2006 winter Olympics in Turin, has his wife permanently by his hospital bedside after enduring a bout of pneumonia that left him hospital-bound and having suffered numerous amputations, it has been reported.

The ice dancing champion, 46, was admitted to hospital in Moscow earlier this year suffering from pneumonia and as a result was forced to have his left foot and several fingers amputated owing to necrosis and sepsis.

Despite being admitted to Kommunarka in Moscow for specialist care, his situation continued to worsen, requiring ventilators to keep him alive.

He has suffered a brain haemorrhage and two strokes and as a result was placed into an induced coma. He was brought out of it, reports suggest, but fears remain over his condition.

Bild, the German publication, report his wife Oksana Domnina, herself an ice dancing world champion (2009) and Olympic bronze medallist (2010) will not leave his side as his condition grows ever more precarious by the days and hours.

Last month, on Kostomarov’s birthday, she shared an emotional message on social media declaring her love for her husband and his courage.

‘Happy birthday my hero, my strong one, my favourite, my champion in everything!

‘I am proud of you, your courage, your strength, your zeal to win in these difficult moments!’ she wrote. ‘Exactly a year ago, we could not have imagined, even in the scariest dream, that such a turnaround in our lives could occur.

‘But now it’s like this, and we will overcome everything, we will cope with everything, I believe! Just live.’

The pair have two children together, a girl and a boy, aged 12 and 7.

The Mirror reported last month that Kostomarov performed at various shows across the winter, despite having a cough. It was said he took drugs to mask the discomfort.

Due to appear in a 25-date Ice Age show in the spring, it was announced that it had been called off altogether after the ‘tragic events’ of the previous few months.

‘We planned [the show in Moscow], the date of March 4 was reserved, but when the year began with such tragic events, we were busy with other things, Director of the project Ilya Averbukh said.

‘I realised that I can’t do a show in this state, it’s impossible to prepare. We canceled the Moscow show.’

Last month, Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin told Russia’s national news agency that the whole of the sports world was concerned for his condition.

‘Today I would like to wish him strength and health,’ Matytsin told TASS.

‘The whole big sports world is worried about Roman and hopes for his speedy recovery. The only truly valuable gift that we can all give him is faith.

‘I am sure that the well-coordinated work of specialists, together with the support of relatives and numerous fans, will help to defeat the disease.’
