Scotland defeated two-time champions West Indies in one of the biggest upsets in T20 World Cup history.

Both sides are competing in Group B of a mini competition to qualify for the final 12 section of the tournament and the giants of the cricketing world were put to the sword, losing by 42 runs.

Scotland have only played two international T20 matches since the last World Cup and sit 15th in the world rankings but were full value for the historic victory.

West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl but the Scots compiled a respectable 160, with George Munsey top-scoring having racked up 66 runs.

Jason holder was the pick of the bowlers, taking two for 14, while Alzarri Joseph also took two wickets but for 28 runs.

The damage was done by the Scots in the powerplay and the opening partnership between Munsey and Michael Jones (20) helped launch the innings.

West Indies never managed to get going in the chase and Holder’s top score of 38 was the best effort from the batsmen.

Eventually they fell short by 42 runs and Munsey was unsurprisingly named as the player of the match.

Scotland and West Indies are in Group B along with Zimbabwe and Ireland. Group A contains Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Namibia and UAE.

The top two sides from each group will go on to reach the ‘Super 12’ part of the competition, where the best eight sides in the world already lie in wait.

England are among those and Scotland will now fancy their chances of reaching that stage of the tournament with the big guns.
