Simon Jordan tells Gary Lineker he is not entitled to ‘freedom of consequence’

Simon Jordan has again hit out at axed presenter Gary Lineker and stated that the Match of the Day host has to face the consequences following his infamous tweet. 

Lineker was made to step back from his hosting role after the BBC decided his post comparing the language used in the Government’s migration plans to that used in Germany in the 1930s had breached impartiality rules.

His removal from the show saw a flurry of presenters, pundits and commentators announce their refusal to work on BBC‘s football coverage in support of Lineker, leading to a Saturday where there was no Football Focus, Final Score and Match of the Day was reduced to a stripped down highlights package. 

Responding to the ongoing situation, Jordan had already accused those standing in solidarity with Lineker of being ‘virtue signalling nitwits‘ and warned the former England captain he must be ‘prepared to fall on his sword’. 

Now, in a fresh post to his Twitter account, Jordan has again called out the 62-year-old and his colleagues who have backed him over his axe.

Lineker was axed from Match of the Day and it saw a flurry of colleagues back the host 

Jordan’s tweeted on Sunday that he thinks Lineker needs to face the consequences 

Telling Lineker that he must face the consequences of what has happened, and calling for those who stood by him to be sacked, Jordan’s social media post said: ‘Gary Lineker is perfectly entitled to freedom of speech … but like all of us not freedom of consequence. 

‘Sign a contract of services with neutrality and no disrepute clauses you get consequenced.

‘As for the rest of them I would fire the lot of them.’ 

Referring to the BBC contract that Lineker has, Jordan believes that he should abide within those terms or deal with the consequences if they are deemed to have been broken. 

Match of the Day, which is one of the most popular shows on the BBC, was aired for a shorter-than-usual 20 minutes on Saturday night 

While those who the talkSPORT presenter suggested should be ‘fired’ include Match of the Day regulars Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and Jermaine Jenas, as well Football Focus host Alex Scott after they all pulled out of their respective BBC vocations following the removal of Lineker on Friday evening. 

Both Match of the Day and Match of the Day 2 went out without any presenter or commentary over the weekend, with Saturday’s unusual version gaining 500,000 more viewers for the slimmed-down 20-minute highlight reel. 

Lineker has refused to apologise for his comments, but was uncharacteristically tight-lipped when spotted on a dog walk on Sunday morning, telling reporters he ‘can’t say anything’ about the situation and that he hadn’t seen Saturday’s highlights show.

However, there is a growing feeling that Lineker will return to his hosting duties after BBC director general Tim Davie flew back from America for crisis talks with one of their highest-paid presenters.
