England coach Steve Borthwick admitted his team are miles behind the pack after suffering their biggest ever defeat at Twickenham.

Boos rang around the stadium after France scored a record 53 points in their first Six Nations victory here since 2005.

Borthwick said: ‘No one is under any illusions about what we have to do, we have been up front about that, and this shows exactly the stark reality. ‘We fell considerably short against the No2 team in the world. We wanted to put on a really good performance for the fans and that really hurts us.’

World Cup-winning coach Sir Clive Woodward said: ‘I never thought I’d see an England team concede 50 points to any side at home in the Six Nations. We knew we were far behind Ireland and France, but not this far.’

Borthwick’s side must now prepare for a daunting trip to Dublin to face No1-ranked Ireland on Saturday.
