England made a promising start to their pursuit of a series whitewash against New Zealand as Stuart Broad took two wickets to reduce the tourists to 65-3 at lunch on the first day of the third Test at Headingley.

Broad continued his excellent record when bowling to left-handers as he had Tom Latham caught for a duck with a ball that moved just enough to take the edge in the first over of the match.

A flighted and dipping delivery from spinner Jack Leach, introduced into the attack early in New Zealand’s innings by captain Ben Stokes, then deceived Will Young and trapped the opener lbw for 20.

Returning captain Kane Williamson, who missed the second Test after contracting Covid-19, attempted to counter-attack and reached 31 before he feathered a Broad delivery into the hands of wicket-keeper Ben Foakes.

New Zealand survived any further losses before the lunch break, although they had a scare when Foakes got a fingertip to an inside edge from Henry Nicholls.

Williamson’s side will be disappointed with the morning session having won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked a good pitch.

But the surface at Headingley consistently kept the bowlers interested as it offered a touch of swing and seam movement.

England handed a debut to fast-bowler Jamie Overton, who was presented with his cap surrounded by family – including twin brother Craig – prior to the start of play.

Overton replaced the injured James Anderson, who is seemingly being saved for the rearranged fifth Test against India next month.

The hosts lead the three-match series, the first under Stokes, 2-0 having triumphed in thrilling contests at Lord’s and Trent Bridge.
