Todd Boehly told Chelsea’s stars their season was ’embarrassing’ after the home defeat by Brighton — and manager Frank Lampard must now try to lift morale for tonight’s defining Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

The Chelsea owner made his way to the dressing room on Saturday and addressed the squad once interim boss Lampard had delivered his post-match team talk.

As well as expressing his disappointment at how Chelsea’s season had panned out, Boehly tried to lift Lampard’s players ahead of tonight’s quarter-final second leg, in which the Blues must overturn a 2-0 deficit.

With Chelsea 11th in the Premier League after third-round exits in both domestic cups, the Champions League represents their last chance to rescue the campaign.

Boehly visiting the dressing room is not unusual, but the nature of his message raised eyebrows. Yet Lampard said: ‘I am comfortable with that. I had my things to say after the game.

If the owner comes in and wants to be positive and speak to the players, then it is his part to do that. It shows passion and that’s the first thing I like.’
