India‘s Rishabh Pant halted England’s momentum with 146 off just 111 balls on day one of the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston.

The visitors were in trouble at 98 for five, before Pant crashed 19 fours and four sixes in a remarkable stand to help his side to 338 for seven at stumps.

Rishabh Pant’s 89-ball hundred was the fastest in a Test match at Edgbaston, surpassing the 115-ball effort of Kevin Pietersen for England against Sri Lanka in 2006. It was the third Test hundred from fewer than 100 deliveries faced made on English soil inside the past month. The previous 141 years included just 10.

Jimmy Anderson’s triple strike made him second only to Ollie Robinson in terms of wickets in the series (19). Robinson, out with an ongoing back injury, took 21 in four matches last summer.

Matthew Potts made it 50 first-class wickets in 2022 with his removal of Hanuma Vihari and then added the prize scalp of Virat Kohli, extending his penchant for dismissing the opposition’s best batsman. Potts has now dismissed Kane Williamson three times and Kohli once for a combined 11 runs.

Potts’ numbers have been excellent in his fledgling career to date. One number he was not happy with, however, was the one on his England shirt. From this match, he has reverted to his Durham number of 35, after ditching the 82 he wore against New Zealand. Zak Crawley, meanwhile, has switched from 56 to 6.

This was the third innings in a row that England have conceded a century stand for the sixth wicket. The efforts of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja followed those of New Zealand pair Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell, who combined for 120 and 113 in Leeds. They also put on 195 at Lord’s and 236 at Trent Bridge – both for the fifth wicket.

India were without first-choice openers Rohit Sharma (Covid) and KL Rahul (hernia). Their average partnership across the start of this series last year was 53. In contrast, the average first wicket yield against England in Tests this summer is 21.

His recent dip in form meant that Virat Kohli entered a Test match with an average below 50 for the first time in almost five years. The previous instance came 41 games previously, against Sri Lanka in November 2017.

This was Stuart Broad’s 156th Test cap, putting him level with Australian great Allan Border. Only eight players have appeared more.
