Usman Khawaja is renowned for his left-field humour – so when cult hero quick Scott Boland made his Test debut versus England at the MCG in 2021, the popular Victorian was put in his place.
As revealed via a screening of Amazon Prime’s ‘The Test’ documentary on Monday, the reserve opening batsman made Boland acutely aware of the pecking order in the Australian dressing room at the time.
When Boland entered the dressing room and sat down ahead of the Boxing Day Test, alpha male Khawaja ‘made’ him move out of his seat.
The humble Boland quickly moved without a fuss – much to the amusement of his teammates.
‘Scotty was sitting down and Uzzie walked in and was like, ‘Scotty mate, come on,’ leg-spinner Mitch Swepson recalled.

‘Scotty’s now over near the coffee machine instead of where he was.
‘Poor man’s on debut and Uzzie’s not even playing. Standard Usman, really.’
Boland had the last laugh, with the Victorian paceman later snaring an incredible 6/7 on home soil in a dream Ashes debut.
The 33-year-old has gone onto take 25 wickets in five Tests, leaving him with a remarkable bowling average of 10.36.
Boland is also only the second male Aboriginal player to have represented Australia – after Jason Gillespie.

Boland has made a flying start to his Test career, amassing incredible figures for Australia including 6/7 on debut versus England in 2021
But Ponting believes Boland’s good performances is due to good fortune rather than skill
Earlier this month, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting declared Boland ‘is actually the luckiest cricketer ever to represent Australia.’
‘Some of the wickets he’s played on, you’d be still getting wickets nowadays,’ he said.
‘Boland’s record is outstanding, but the cold, hard facts are that he wasn’t in Australia’s best three fast bowlers at the start of the summer.’
It followed Boland being overlooked by selectors for the recent Third Test versus South Africa at the SCG.
