Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has reportedly been identified by Tottenham as their first choice candidate to replace Antonio Conte, who departed last month.

The former Manchester City captain has overseen a remarkable transformation at Burnley this season after the club were relegated last term amid a string of financial concerns.

Kompany has transformed the way the club operates, both on and off the pitch, leading Burnley to promotion with seven games to spare, with many observers dubbing them the best team to ever grace England’s second tier.

According to The Sun, Tottenham have become one of Kompany’s many such admirers and see him as the ideal candidate to takeover this summer.

It is claimed that Daniel Levy has been personally blown away by the way Kompany has led Burnley back to the Premier League playing a proactive and attractive style.

Having been reported last month that Kompany was on a shortlist with a host of other names including Julian Nagelsmann and Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, it is now said he has shot to the top.

Tottenham have reportedly received glowing reviews of his nature and character and as such view him as the person to transform the club.

The report makes direct reference to the way Mikel Arteta has overseen something akin to a revolution at Arsenal since he arrived in December 2019.

Arteta arrived at Arsenal to a fractured squad and club, with the supporters increasingly tired of overpaid, ageing former superstars and the club pottering along in the lower European places in the Premier League.

The Spaniard ensured that the club’s atmosphere improved at the Emirates through a number of initiatives, including blooding a team of young players, that has galvanised an unbreakable bond between the current squad and supporters.

Arsenal, despite finishing last season disappointingly behind their north London rivals, are seen by many as the blueprint for how to change fortunes at the moment and are rivalling Manchester City for their first league crown in 19 years.

Arteta’s schooling under Pep Guardiola at City is similar to the lessons Kompany learnt, with both having spent equal time under Guardiola in Manchester.

Kompany captained City to two Premier League crowns, an FA Cup and two League Cups under the Catalan.

It is said that Kompany would be willing to Tottenham try to sell him the idea of joining, with the Belgian harbouring ambitions of reaching the very top of the game.

Tottenham wish to avoid a similar scenario that beset them at the outset of the 2021-22 campaign when they eventually had to settle on seventh or eighth choice Nuno Espirito Santo.

Levy had failed to appoint a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who had been sacked in April of that year and replaced by Ryan Mason on an interim basis, by July and was forced to settle on the former Wolves boss, who was eventually sacked and replaced by Conte.

Tottenham’s hopes of having a clear run at a number of managers were scuppered when Chelsea, the following week, parted ways with Graham Potter.

Reports out of both clubs suggest they are shopping in similar markets: with young, forward-thinking and progressive managers the seeming order of the day.
