Wayne Rooney is not ready to become Everton manager according to former Manchester United team-mate Mikael Silvestre.

Everton are on the lookout for a permanent manager, with Duncan Ferguson taking over the role on an interim basis, following the sacking of Rafael Benitez after their 2-1 defeat to Norwich.

Former Everton star Rooney meanwhile has impressed at Derby County in difficult circumstances, given their 21-point deduction which leaves them in the Championship relegation zone.

Rooney has been one of the names tipped to take on the Everton role permanently but Silvestre believes it would be too soon for the 36-year-old.

He told Slingo Casino: ‘Rooney isn’t ready for the Everton job – he needs more time to develop as a manager.

“He should give himself more time – opportunities like this might not ever come back, so that’s something to consider.

‘It’s still early doors, he’s done a good job at Derby despite the circumstances. But my advice would be to keep learning his craft and learning about himself before going into the hot seat.

‘He is a very young manager, still playing not long ago. Jobs like this will come in the future if he carries on like this because his name is huge in the Premier League.’

Former Liverpool manager Benitez was sacked by the Toffees after a miserable start to the season in which they lost ten of their 19 league games so far this season.

Ferguson will take over the role on an interim base starting with Saturday’s visit of Aston Villa, as the club’s owners search for a new permanent manager.

Rooney came through the club’s academy before leaving for Manchester United where he forged a legendary career breaking their all-time scoring record.

He later returned to Everton from the Red Devils in 2017 for one last season at the club before stints at D.C. United and Derby County.

Derby were initially handed a 12-point deduction for entering administration, which was then increased to 21 points after admitting to breaches of the EFL’s profitability and sustainability rules over the sale of Pride Park to their former owner Mel Morris.

Despite their turmoil off the pitch which has left them 23rd in the standings on 14 points so far, they would actually be sitting in 11th if it wasn’t for the points deduction.
