Were the Brisbane Lions robbed of a chance at a thrilling victory against the Dees? Fans left divided after crucial mark was not paid in dying seconds

  • Lions could have beaten Demons after the siren at MCG
  • 50/50 mark call went the way of the home side in thriller
  • Brisbane players and supporters left fuming at decision
  • Continued MCG hoodoo for Chris Fagan’s shattered Lions

Footy fans were left divided after the final play on Friday night following an AFL thriller between the Brisbane Lions and Melbourne Demons at the MCG.

Max Gawn inspired the hosts to a come from behind one-point win in a clash many labelled the game of the season – but some supporters, especially those residing in Queensland, felt the away side were short changed at the death.

A contested mark in the last play of the game between Demons star Jake Lever and Lions key forward Eric Hipwood was awarded to the home side – and Brisbane were fuming.

On social media, plenty of Lions fans felt the on-field call was incorrect, while Demons supporters were elated at the decision.

‘It was a Melbourne mark. Brisbane ripped it from the Demons player,’ one tweeted, with another supporter bluntly stating the Lions ‘sh*t the bed.’

The result also continued Brisbane’s woeful record at the MCG, where they haven’t won a home and away game since 2014.

Lions great Jonathan Brown said Chris Fagan’s men will be ‘kicking themselves’ and ‘should be filthy’ after conceding three goals in eight minutes to lose in heartbreaking fashion.

‘The Lions were doing it easy,’ Brown proclaimed on Fox Footy.

‘Through the work of two men, [Max] Gawn and [Christian] Petracca, they [Demons] just bulldozed their way back into the game.

‘Brisbane should have won, simple as that, they will be kicking themselves and will be filthy. ‘The pressure came, maybe it paralysed them a bit.’

Demons legend Garry Lyon was stunned once the siren went.

‘Melbourne have just executed one of the great escapes, one of the best I’ve seen,’ he said on Fox Footy.

‘It’s just heartbreak for Brisbane Lions fans everywhere but for Melbourne fans it’s just delirium.’

Brownlow Medallist Nathan Buckley added that the scars will likely remain for Brisbane, who ‘were in a winning position and lost their way.’
