A West Ham fan has died after being hit by a train following the London side’s 1-1 draw away to Belgian side Gent on Thursday.

The 57-year-old supporter had been at the KAA Stadium to watch David Moyes‘ team in the Europa Conference League before travelling back via the train station, where he was struck.

He was taken to hospital for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead.

Investigators at Ghent’s Sint-Pieters station labelled it an ‘unfortunate accident’.

It is reported that train services in the area were disrupted for hours following the collision, before normal service resumed around 3am on Friday morning.

Belgian broadcaster VRT NWS has reported that the man was hit by the train at 9.45pm.

It has been claimed that he ended up on track 12 when he collided with a train that was bound for Ostend.

Gent’s fans will now prepare for a trip to London when the two teams meet for the Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg next week.

The tie is level at 1-1 with all to play for for a spot in the semi-final.
