Why Panama players broke down in tears as they sang national anthem ahead of their opening World Cup match against Brazil

They may have been outclassed 4-0 by Brazil, but Panama’s players clearly loved the big stage on Monday in Adelaide.

In their World Cup debut, many squad members of Las Canaleras cried tears of joy pre-game, as they heard their national anthem sung with pride.

Plenty of football fans felt the tear-jerker moment at Hindmarsh Stadium summed up the world game.

‘This is what it’s all about!! The pride to represent your country at the highest level doing the thing you love!! Just beautiful!,’ one supporter tweeted.

A second posted: ‘This is so beautiful, the happiness to represent your nation with the world watching.’

The South American champions then sent out an ominous warning to their rivals with a dominant showing.

Midfielder Ary Borges was scintillating at times, finishing with a hat-trick and Bia Zaneratto rifled home a brilliant effort early in the second half.

The lead-up play was beautiful team football from start to finish, and also an early contender for goal of the tournament.

Brazilian legend Marta then entered the fray late on, and the reception was fitting given her status in the sport.

Remarkably, this is the 37-year-old’s sixth World Cup.

Selecao coach Pia Sundhage was delighted with the result and the impressive 90 minute performance.

‘We scored four and I’m very happy,’ she said. ‘As long as we create chances, there is no concern.

‘I’m very satisfied with the [on-field] combinations, and that Panama didn’t score a goal either.’

Panama coach Ignacio Quintana admitted the David versus Goliath clash was daunting, but is looking forward to the next group match against Jamaica.

‘Our level is not 4-0, definitely there is room for improvement,’ he said. ‘We cannot stay on this defeat, we need to turn the page.’
