Benoit Paire was heckled by the crowd and sanctioned by the umpire for not trying on Tuesday as the most controversial figure in tennis was meekly knocked out in the first round.

The Frenchman was 6-3, 6-4, 5-0 down against Diego Schwartzman when the match took a peculiar turn on Court Two.

The 32-year-old played two soft returns into the net before being given a court violation for poor sportsmanship.

Paire promptly returned to his seat and demanded that umpire Mohamed Lahyani call the physio.

Lahyani replied: ‘I’m not going to call the physio. You have to show more sportsmanship. You have to try to do your best.’

While Paire argued back, a fan called out to him: ‘You’re wasting everybody’s time.’

After losing the set 6-0, Paire said: ‘I do not care about the people. I play for me and that is it.’
