Wolves have been charged by the FA after their supporters were found to be singing homophobic chants during the Premier League clash with Chelsea last month.

The game – which Wolves won 1-0 at Molineux –  was marred by some of the home side’s fans behaviour and a tannoy announcement was put out telling them to stop the chanting.

However, a section of supporters responded by booing the announcement and they began to sing the homophobic chants louder.

Three arrests were made by West Midlands police as a result and the FA have now confirmed the club has been officially charged.

A statement read: ‘Wolverhampton Wanderers have been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E21 following their Premier League match against Chelsea on Saturday 8 April.

‘It is alleged that, during the 61st and 71st minutes of the fixture, the club failed to ensure that spectators and/or its supporters, and anyone purporting to be its supporters or followers, conduct themselves in an orderly fashion, and do not use words or otherwise behave in a way which is improper, offensive, abusive, indecent, or insulting with either express or implied reference to sexual orientation.’

Wolves strongly slammed the actions of those responsible after the clash on April 8.

A club spokesperson said: ‘We strongly condemn the discriminatory chants aimed towards Chelsea supporters at today’s game.

‘In response to the chants, supporters were reminded by a public address system announcement that discriminatory behaviour and chants of this nature are not tolerated at Molineux.

‘Homophobia, like all other forms of discrimination, has no place in football or society, and anyone engaging in discriminatory behaviour is committing a criminal offence.’

The club have been given until May 15 to respond to the charge.

The FA’s action on the chant – which has been heard at a number of Chelsea games this season – comes after they added it to its list of rule breaches back in January, meaning the governing body can take action against clubs whose supporters sing it at matches.

At the time, an FA spokesperson said: ‘We strongly condemn all offensive, abusive and discriminatory chanting in football stadiums, and are determined to stamp this behaviour out.

The FA can now take action against clubs whose supporters sing the homophobic chant

‘These chants can have a lasting and damaging impact on people and communities within our game, and it must stop.

‘We have formally written to all clubs across the Premier League, EFL, National League, Barclays Women’s Super League, Barclays Women’s Championship and Steps 2-4, to remind them that it can pursue formal disciplinary action against any club whose supporters engage in discriminatory behaviour, now including the use of the term “Rent Boy”.’

Reacting after the game, Chelsea had said: ‘Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour totally unacceptable.

‘It condemns the homophobic chanting by some home fans at Molineux this afternoon. Chelsea will continue to work closely with Chelsea Pride and the broader football community to eradicate these vile chants from our game.’
