Sami Zayn’s incredible odyssey to the WWE Undisputed Heavyweight Championship did not get the fairytale ending he craved in his hometown of Montreal, Canada.

After being booted out of The Bloodline at the Royal Rumble, Zayn challenged Roman Reigns to hopefully tie a bow on one of the greatest storylines WWE has ever crafted.

Unfortunately, there would be no all-time moment for Zayn holding his first-ever WWE wold title in front of his family and friend. He would fall to the champion who extends his 900-day-plus reign, but it wouldn’t be without shenanigans.

The match kicked off with Zayn and Reigns standing across from each other soaking in the atmosphere for around five minutes. No touching, just allowing everyone to witness and appreciate the moment.

The champion started the match as the dominant force. He made his presence felt in the early exchanges with headlocks and running shoulders, but Zayn eventually got his first taste of offence when he launched Reigns over the top rope and hit him with a dive to the outside.

Reigns retained control for the vast majority and he did a lot of talking about how Zayn betrayed him at the same time.

The former Honourary Uce fought back with a series of impassioned strikes that led to a sunset-flip powerbomb from the top rope. Still, that was only good enough for a two-count and Reigns was able to dictate proceedings again almost immediately.

Sami kicked out of Reigns’ first Superman Punch of the night. When the Tribal Chief attempted to land a Spear, Zayn was able to counter and land a Superman Punch of his own, followed by a Helluva Kick.

However, Reigns kicked out without a single mini-second to spare.

The champion attempted to put Zayn through the barricade, but when the hometown hero moved out of the way, he was bale to hit the Blue Thunder Bomb to get yet another near fall.

The crowd in Montreal was at fever pitch and a second Helluva kick sent them into a full-blown frenzy as they counted as high as 10 where Reigns lie motionless – but the referee was knocked out.

Jimmy Uso took the opportunity to interfere with the referee out cold and one-half of the WWE Undisputed Tag Team champions hit a series of superkicks before nailing the Uso Splash from the top rope.

That still wasn’t enough to keep Zayn down in the match of his dreams.

Zayn took out Jimmy Uso with a Helluva kick and walked right into a Spear. Did that keep him down? Absolutely not.

Finally, estranged Bloodline member Jey Uso made his presence felt. With Reigns ready to take Zayn’s head off with a steel chair, Jey stepped in to protect the Canadian.

Reigns told Jey to hit Zayn with the chair, but when he hesitated, Zayn went to Spear Reigns and accidentally hit Jey.

That’s what led to his demise. Reigns was able to blast Zayn with the chair several times following the confusion. Then, the final Spear that put Zayn down for the dreaded three-count that stunned Montreal.

As the Bloodline prepared to tear into Zayn, Kevin Owens – also a Montreal native and almost lifelong best friend of Zayn – made the save and helped his compatriot clear house, to the delight of the Bell Centre.

Earlier in the night, Asuka won the Women’s Elimination Chamber to secure her place at WrestleMania. The Empress of Tomorrow has earned the right to challenge Bianca Belair for the RAW Women’s championship.

Austin Theory retained his United States title in the Men’s Elimination Chamber after Logan Paul cost Seth Rollins the win at the last moment. That undoubtedly sets up Paul versus Rollins at WrestleMania 39 while Theory is rumoured to be taking on John Cena.
