England finished day two at Old Trafford in the ascendancy after a stunning innings from Zak Crawley, who ended his stand on 189 followed 21 fours and three sixes.
The hosts were dominant throughout the day, with Crawley aided superbly initially by Moeen Ali for 54, before Joe Root entered the fray, departing late in the day for 84 of his own, having put on a 200 partnership with the Kent opener.
Australia struggled to stem the tide of runs from Ben Stokes‘ side, and looked without ideas after deciding to pack their line-up with batting and leave out spinner Todd Murphy, and were dealt a further blow as Mitchell Starc was forced off the field clutching at his left shoulder.
