Andy Murray agonisingly missed out on a 47th career title after suffering defeat (4-6, 7-5, 3-6) to Matteo Berrettini in the final of the Stuttgart Open.

The Scot had a stuttering start to the deciding set after he conceded the break to love in the first game and his woes continued as he received medical treatment on his left hip throughout the set before Berrettini dominantly secured victory.

The Italian had stormed to a win in the first set before Murray impressively responded to clinch the second.

Murray notched impressive victories over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios in the quarter and semi finals in search of his 47th career title and first on grass since Wimbledon 2016 but it was not meant to be for the 35-year-old.
