Tom Curran has suffered an identical injury to younger brother Sam and will therefore miss the start of the 2022 domestic season with a stress fracture of the back.

Curran, 26, experienced discomfort playing for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League last month.

Scans back in London confirmed the fears that a player who was a member of England’s Twenty20 World Cup squad last autumn but did not make an appearance would be side-lined for several months.

Fellow Surrey all-rounder and sibling Sam was ruled out of both the World Cup and Ashes with a stress fracture at the end of last summer.

Curran senior was overlooked for England’s 16-man squad for five T20 internationals versus West Indies in Barbados later this month as soon as medics realised a hot spot in his back had developed while playing down under and will now recuperate under the guidance of the Surrey staff.

It is hoped he will be fit to return to action by the start of the Vitality Blast campaign in late May.

By that point it will have been more than three years since his last County Championship match.

In addition to the Currans, England have two other bowlers in rehab currently.

Olly Stone underwent back surgery last summer and Jofra Archer recently underwent the knife for the second time on a right elbow issue.
