Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Enzo Fernandez ‘looked lost’ during Chelsea‘s 1-0 defeat by Manchester City, while the Sky Pundit also said he ‘felt sorry’ for the World Cup winner.
Man City looked in cruise control during the match, taking the lead early in the game through a well-worked goal from Julian Alvarez, who swiped a shot across Kepa Arrizabalaga to put the hosts a goal up.
But the former Tottenham and Liverpool player appeared to not be overly impressed with some of Chelsea’s players, including their marquee £107million January signing, Fernandez, before he claimed that the match had a ‘testimonial feel’ to it.
Redknapp also gave his opinion of what Chelsea’s mentality would be coming into this game, with the Blues currently sitting 12th in the league after what’s been a season they may want to forget.
With just two games left of the season to play, he said Frank Lampard’s players will be thinking: ‘We have to get this game over with.’

Fernandez was signed by the Blues in January for £107million after his fantastic World Cup campaign
But he failed to spur Frank Lampard’s (left) side to victory today, with Chelsea now 12th in the league
‘I look at Enzo in midfield. We’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, he was excellent at the World Cup.
‘He looks lost, I feel a bit sorry for him. It seems the case for a lot of the players right now.
‘I think the younger players are going to get as much experience as they can out of it. It’s a tough one because you’re playing against the champions, it’s the parade.’
The 22-year-old dazzled for his national side at the 2022 World Cup featuring in all of Argentina’s matches to become one of the most talked about players at the competition.
And Fernandez has featured heavily for Lampard’s side, since joining in January, the Argentine failed to spur his team forwards today, making only 39 passes, a scratch on the 109 he played during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw to Nottingham Forest last week.
After Jorginho departed in January, the midfielder arrived to replace him and has since made 15 league appearances for the Blues, but has only helped them win three of the games he’s been involved in.
Despite having spent £323m in January, the London club have underperformed, dropping into the second half of the table, losing 15 of their 36 games during this campaign.
City, meanwhile, had already claimed the title coming into the match, after Arsenal were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Redknapp also said that there was a ‘testimonial feel’ around the game today, with the home side not wanting to incur any injuries with their clash against Inter Milan in the Champions League final fast approaching. He also claimed that Lampard’s side were hoping for an end to their difficult season.
Speaking on the host’s midfield, he added: ‘Man City certainly in midfield, Rico Lewis has been exceptional and so has Phil Foden.
Redknapp also claimed in the game that ‘Chelsea just want this season over it’s been that bad’

It is their third consecutive Premier League title, with the club having now been crowned English champions nine times in their history
‘It’s a testimonial feel to the game. It’s one of those where you don’t want to get injured if you’re a Man City player and Chelsea just want this season over it’s been that bad.’
Chelsea now have a very tough end to their season, with a trip away to Manchester United coming in midweek before they welcome high-flying Newcastle to Stamford Bridge, with Eddie Howe’s side hoping to get another win to cement their place in the top four.
City meanwhile also have a few very tough games to come, playing Brighton and Brentford in their last two league games before taking on Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
Guardiola’s side will then play Inter Milan on June 10 in the Champions League final as they bid to win the treble this season.
