Liverpool have written to the PGMOL asking for clarification after they were left frustrated by two decisions they believe proved costly against Aston Villa.

There has a string of incidents in recent weeks with match officials during Liverpool games and exasperation with Anfield was increased on Saturday following incidents either side of half-time that left them perplexed.

Tyrone Mings was booked by referee John Brooks for a chest high challenge on Cody Gakpo that left the Netherlands international writhing in agony; his shirt was ripped in the collision and he was left with stud marks on his torso.

The episode was reviewed by VAR Tony Harrington for a possible red card but Brooks’ decision was not changed even though Gakpo had required length treatment. Many saw that Mings could easily have been deemed to be guilty of reckless or dangerous play.

After the break, Gakpo thought he had scored an equaliser in front of The Kop but that goal was chalked out by Harrington on VAR after it was deemed Virgil van Dijk, who provided the ‘assist’, was in an offside position when the ball came to him off Ezri Konsa.

Van Dijk was flummoxed by it all, saying: ‘I didn’t understand what was going on. I asked (fourth official) Michael Oliver on the side and apparently it was a question if the Villa player deliberately headed it back and I have no idea if he did, yes or no.

‘I’ve no idea. I think it would be good if next season we can hear what they discuss, everyone around it, and be transparent. For them to explain with you guys, coming here, that’s what happened in Holland, why not over here?’

Liverpool have felt increasingly aggrieved over a number of issues of late and they are now seeking clarification from PGMOL chief Howard Webb over how the decisions against Villa were arrived at by Harrington.
