Yorkshire were forced to eject the son of their former director of cricket and long-serving captain, Martyn Moxon, from the first day of the third Test at Headingley after receiving reports of an alleged assault.

Mail Sport has learned that the police were called towards the end of the final session of play on Thursday following several heated incidents involving Moxon’s son and a group including representatives of Yorkshire’s main sponsors NIC Services, which culminated in a male spectator being pulled from a chair.

Jonathan Moxon, who made one appearance for Yorkshire’s Second XI a decade ago, is understood to have been thrown out of the club his father served with distinction for over 30 years as a player, coach and director of cricket.

To compound the embarrassment the row involved several representatives of Leeds-based management consultancy NIC Services, whose logo appears on the Yorkshire’s shirts in the County Championship.

Leeds District Police have launched an investigation into the incident despite the fact that no-one was injured in the altercation.

‘Enquiries are ongoing following a report of an assault at Headingley Stadium during the evening of July 6,’ a spokesman said. ‘A male spectator was pulled from a chair and uninjured in the incident which is being investigated by Leeds District Police.’

Yorkshire confirmed the incident was dealt with by their security staff.

‘We can confirm that there was an isolated incident which was handled by Yorkshire CCC security,’ a spokesperson said. ‘We are unable to provide further details.’

The acrimonious fall-out from Martyn Moxon’s departure from Yorkshire 18 months ago may have played a part in the development of Thursday’s row, with many of his family still suffering from the ramifications and resentful of the way he was treated.

Moxon was signed off work with a stress-related illness by Yorkshire in November 2021 after Azeem Rafiq’s explosive allegations of institutional racism at a parliamentary select committee before being sacked by new chairman Lord Patel the following month along with the rest of the club’s 16-strong coaching team.

Moxon subsequently received compensation from Yorkshire after they admitted his claim of unfair dismissal. Yorkshire compelled Moxon to sign an non-disclosure agreement in return for receiving a financial settlement and he has never spoken about his departure.
